University Introduction
Curtin University , formerly known as Curtin University of Technology and Western Australian Institute of Technology, is an Australian public research institution in Bentley, Perth, Western Australia. Named after John Curtin, Australia's Prime Minister from 1941 to 1945, it is the largest university in Western Australia, boasting a student population of 58,607 as of 2022.
Established in 1966 as WAIT, Curtin gained university status following legislative approval by the Parliament of Western Australia in 1986. Since then, it has expanded its reach with campuses in Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, and Mauritius and affiliations with 90 exchange universities across 20 countries . The university encompasses five main faculties and hosts over 95 specialist centers. Although it had a Sydney campus from 2005 to 2016, Curtin University is now primarily based in Bentley, Perth.
Curtin University is a member of the Australian Technology Network and is actively engaged in research across various academic and practical domains. Notably, it is the sole Western Australian university whose students have been honored with the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering's Postgraduate Student Gold Medal as of 2020.
