The university is a member of several prestigious alliances, including the International Alliance of Research Universities, the Group of Eight, the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, and the Worldwide Universities Network. ANU is the only national university in Australia established by an act of the Australian Parliament, while other public universities in Australia are state-funded institutions.

Additionally, the Australian National Museum and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), Australia's largest scientific research agency, are located in the vicinity of the campus. ANU scholars comprise the highest number of Australian Fellows of the Academy of Science and rank first in terms of members in the Royal Society of London among Australian institutions. Its alumni include six Nobel laureates, forty-nine Rhodes Scholars, two Australian Prime Ministers, twelve serving federal ministers, and thirty current ambassadors.
In the 2024 QS World University Rankings, ANU is ranked 34th globally and 4th in Australia. In the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, it ranks 59th globally and 3rd in Australia.
