University Introduction
The University of Sydney (USYD) , commonly referred to as Sydney or USYD, is a public research university located in Sydney, Australia. Established in 1850, it is one of Australia's oldest universities and is renowned as a leading institution of higher education in the Southern Hemisphere and globally. As of 2024, the University of Sydney is ranked 19th in the QS World University Rankings, 51st in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, and 27th in the US News World University Rankings. Its Business School is ranked 15th in the Asia-Pacific region by The Economist and holds triple accreditation from top global accrediting bodies. Additionally, its MBA program was ranked first in Australia by the Financial Times in 2024. According to the 2022 QS Graduate Employability Rankings, the University of Sydney is ranked fourth globally, following only Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, and the University of California, Los Angeles.
The University of Sydney is a member of the Group of Eight, the Sandstone universities, the Pacific Rim University Alliance, the Asia-Pacific International Trade and Education Research Alliance, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and is the only Australian university selected for the Global Alliance in Management Education ( CEMS ).
Throughout its history, the University of Sydney has produced numerous notable figures, including eight Australian Prime Ministers, two Australian Governors-General, five Chief Justices of Australia, Presidents of the United Nations General Assembly, Presidents of the International Court of Justice, and Presidents of the World Bank, among others. Its alumni also include several of Australia's wealthiest individuals. Furthermore, seven Nobel laureates and Crawford Prize winners, as well as 110 Rhodes Scholars, are counted among the University of Sydney's alumni.
