University Introduction
The University of Queensland (UQ), located in Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, Australia, was established on December 10, 1909, by the Queensland Parliament. As the first university in Queensland and one of Australia's oldest and largest institutions, UQ has four campuses and multiple research centers. It ranks third in Australia according to the average ranking of four global university ranking agencies. Additionally, UQ is one of Australia's six sandstone universities and a member of the Group of Eight (Go8) and Universitas 21, as well as a founding member of edX.
UQ boasts a picturesque campus with historic sandstone buildings. The main campus is situated in the St Lucia suburb of Brisbane, covering over 114 hectares adjacent to the Brisbane River and only 7 kilometers from the city center. The campus features various amenities such as banks, bookstores, pharmacies, optometry clinics, retail outlets, and cafés, along with Queensland's largest library. Moreover, UQ has the most comprehensive sports facilities among Australian universities, including indoor sports halls, a sports medicine center, soccer fields, tennis courts, an Olympic-standard heated swimming pool, hockey fields, volleyball courts, cycling and running tracks, and archery facilities. Cultural facilities on campus include a cinema, theaters, galleries, museums, and music halls, regularly hosting classical or popular musicians and actors for performances or student activities.
The main St Lucia campus is surrounded by the Brisbane River and is only a 10-minute drive from Brisbane's western CBD. The Herston campus, adjacent to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, is home to the medical school, facilitating clinical trials for students. The Gatton campus is primarily dedicated to agricultural, veterinary, and food science studies.
