University Introduction
The University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney; UNSW for short) is a public research university in Australia. Its main campus is located in Sydney, the capital of New South Wales. Founded in 1949, it is one of the world-class research institutions. As one of the eight Australian universities, UNSW is also a member of three internationally renowned research university alliances: the Alliance of Pacific Rim Universities ( APRU ), the Global Alliance of Technology Universities and Universitas 21 (U21).
According to the 2024 QS World University Rankings , the University of New South Wales ranks 19th in the world, while according to the 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings , the school ranks 67th in the world. UNSW ranks among the best in all major rankings , demonstrating its leading position in the global higher education community. In addition, according to the 2021 QS World University Rankings by Subject, UNSW has six subjects ranked in the top 20 in the world, including mining and mineral engineering, civil and structural engineering, law, petroleum engineering, accounting and finance, and environmental science.
UNSW is known as the "MIT of the Southern Hemisphere" and has the largest engineering school in Australia, which is famous for its electrical engineering major. The university has trained many outstanding engineers, nearly a quarter of whom were included in the list of the top 100 most influential engineers in 2015. In addition, in the field of business, UNSW's business school is also among the best and enjoys an international reputation.
